Description

TRING GROVE ROAD SP 91 SW (East side) Tring Grove 4/64 No. 66 - (Grove Farm Cottages) - II House. Circa 1500, floor inserted c.1600, late C17 rear wing and outshut, c.1900 S bay rebuilt and front cased in brick. Timber frame brick nogged and roughcast, front in yellow stock brick, rear wing cased in red brick. Steep machine made red tile roofs. A late medieval cruck-framed house aligned N-S with formerly open hall, and N-bay upper end also originally open to roof. House formerly longer to S. Chimney c.1600 inserted at lower end of hall and lobby entrance probably replaced a cross-passage. 4 windows long W front with 4 gabled dormers rising through eaves, and door with gabled trellis porch between lst and 2nd windows from S. 2-light recessed casements with small panes and cambered arches to ground floor. 4-panel raised and fielded door. Taller 2-storeys and attic rear wing at N end with C19 flush casement windows, and rear catslide outshut. S end stucco lined as ashlar with a 2-light casement on each floor. Interesting development of house characteristic of many long-houses. Intact structure of 3 pairs of crucks of 'truncated' form like Moor Cottage, Water End, Great Gaddesden. Blacked rafters but no evidence for a ridge beam. 2 N trusses have spur ties to wall plate instead of tie-beams. Roof originally half hipped. Curved wind braces to heavy purlins.
