Description

HILGAY WOOD HALL ROAD TL 69 NW Wood Hall 3/14 9.7.51 - II* House. Dated 1579, partly altered and rebuilt after fire of 1806, probably by Humphry Repton. Brick with plain tiled roofs. E plan. North front of 2 storeys and attic. Central full height gabled porch projects as far as cross wings to east and west. Porch entered through square doorway below pediment. Engaged reeded and fluted clasping Ionic pilasters support entablature at first floor which has initials and mottos in roundels and date 1579. Second floor with clasping reeded and fluted Tuscan pilasters to second architrave. This floor with renewed 3-light cross casement window. 3 square panelled pinacles stand on plinths at gable eaves and at apex. Renewed 3- light cross casement in attic. 2 bays right and left of porch with string course between floors and eaves cornice. Fenestration of cross casements. The bays to the right rebuilt 1806. Gabled roof with 2 groups of polygonal flued ridge stacks. Cross wings have polygonal corner turrets carrying 3 gable pinnacles. String courses at first floor. Ground floor windows of 5-light C19 cross casements below diamond studded friezes. First floor windows similar but below pediments carrying engaged side and apex finials and with tympana punched with roundels. 4-light attic cross casements. South front of 2 storeys and attic. Composition revolves round central full height gabled porch but symmetry disturbed by massive external stack to right and elongated east cross wing. Main block with string courses at first floor and below parapet. 4 3-light C19 cross casements in 2 bays left of porch built 1806. One bay to right with one similar window each floor, next bay with chimney breast carrying triple octagonal flue. West cross wing substantially as those to north front but without pediment or frieze over windows. Larger east cross wing gable and originally of same design but 2 storey canted bay window added 1806 with cross casements and strapwork parapet enlivened by ball finials. Pinnacle at apex of gable missing. 2 gabled and one flat C19 dormers in roof of main range. East and west facades each characterised by 2 large external chimney breasts with multiple polygonal flues. Interior retains closed string staircase with square strapwork newels and turned balusters. Otherwise interior altered.
