Description

WELLINGTON ROAD 1. 5104 Edgbaston B15 No 59 SP 0684 NW 50/16 II GV 2. C1820-30 substantial stucco villa with elegant Grecian details. A 3 bay symmetrical 3 storey front with matching fourth bay to north. Ground floor built out C1840-50 with quadrant screen walls with swept copings curving out to roadside, the north quadrant linking with coach house. The first floor is articulated by incised Soanian pilasters (originally giant order), supporting entablature and parapet. The entrance bay is slightly advanced with attic storey flanked by large acanthus volutes and surmounted by pediment. Architrave framed glazing bar sashes to first floor and one to attic. The built out ground floor has single and coupled narrow, archivolt arched windows with keystones. Projecting porch with semi-circular fanlight over double 4 panel door. The linked coach house presents a screen front and the road with 2 segmental arched coach doors, incised voussoirs, blind panelled attic, cornice and parapet over left half - coach house/stable range extending behind. The east garden front set on terrace is properly of 3 symmetrical bays with fourth bay to north. Channelled ground floor; first floor plat band; quoin pilasters flanking first floor but giant order to principal centre bay with pedimented attic and volutes as an entrance front. Architrave framed windows to first floor, tripartite to centre. Stucco canted hays flanking central bow with balustraded parapet on ground floor. The fourth bay has channelling to both floors; oriel bay window with tent roof on first floor and glazing bar sash windows below. Interior retains simple Regency moulded doorcases and a fine staircase rising, behind arched screen to hall, in a tight elliptical well on the north side of the house: open delicately cut string, cast iron superimposed column banisters with raked scrolled links, moulded handrail scrolled to foot; secondary flight through arch in north end of well at mid flight curve of main stair.
