House. 1938-42. By Raymond McGrath for Sir Charles Keene. Red brick (probably of C16) ground floor with elm weatherborading, 1st floor and felted mainly monopitch roof with 2 brick stacks to rear. Long range curving away on left. 2 storeys of 6 wide casement windows. Centre left 1st floor recessed. Entrance door to left under flat topped porch. Small alteration on right where furthest window replaces garage doors. The exterior remains as built except for replacement, wide french window in Drawing Room which however is in original frame. Inside the small alterations are to service rooms and the replacement of the secondary staircase. The principal curving staircase remains together with wooden fittings in several rooms designed by McGrath. Floor, furniture and doors in the Dining Room in Tasmarian. Silk wood; book shelfs in Drawing Room in probably burr oak; bookcases and cupboards in 1st floor study in walnut; and further bookcases and wardrobes in bedrooms. The windows, though perhaps originally stained not painted, have only been renewed in part where necessary and retain their original fittings. The surrounding garden containing many specimen trees was designed by Christopher Tunnard. This house is one of only 2 or 3 houses designed by McGrath in this country.
