House. C17 with mid C18 and mid C19 alterations and additions. Rubble with slate roof. Comprises a main range aligned east-west, of two C17 builds; a late C17 south stair projection greatly extended in the mid C18 to form a south wing; and a north wing of mid C19 date with possible C18 remains. 2 storeys with attic. The east gable wall of the main range has a chamfered one-light window to the left of a projecting chimney stack, a similar window to each side of the stack on the 1st floor, and a blocked attic window. An earlier roof line is visible in the stonework, suggesting that this end of the house was formerly thatched. The south wall of this wing is of one bay and has windows with glazing bars and plain reveals. On the ground floor are remains of a mullioned window surround. At attic level is a blocked chamfered window of late C17 type, post-dating the raising of the eaves level. The east wall of the south wing has a straight-joint marking the junction between the late C17 stair projection and the mid C18 wing. To its right is a one-light chamfered window, with a mid C18 sashed window with glazing bars and cyma-moulded surround lighting the stair. The east wall of the north wing is blind except for a C19 6-pane sash on the ground floor. To the left, in the angle with the main range, is a lean-to porch which covers an inner doorway with a lintel inscribed 1759. The south wall of the south wing is of 3 bays and has openings with cyma-moulded stone surrounds. The windows are sashed with glazing bars. Door in right-hand bay. Chimneys on east wall of main range, north gable of north wing, east and west walls of south wing, and south gable of south wing. Interior: east end of main range has fireplace with splayed rubble sides and plain stone lintel, and a chamfered main ceiling joist. West end of main range has plastered main joists and steps to cellar under north wing. South wing has room lined with painted bolection- moulded panelling of early C18 type, re-used and cut to fit the dimensions of the present room. A round-headed cupboard in the north wall is flanked by Doric pilasters. Inside the cupboard doors are painted figures. The stair in the south wing is of late C17 type, with closed string, moulded handrail and barley-sugar balusters. It was probably re-arranged when the wing was extended, but there is no obvious structural evidence for this. On the 1st floor the bedroom at the east end of the main range has pegged oak floorboards, a fireplace with mid C18 stone surround, and a high ceiling which now cuts across the blocked attic window in the south wall. The west end of the main range has an inserted partition forming a corridor. The doorway to the stair has a moulded plaster boarder and a timber doorframe with late C17 scribed mouldings. The south wall of the west bedroom has the remains of plaster which includes a moulded cornice and a panel with moulded border. A blocked one-light window probably lit a closet. Close to the west gable wall is a ceiling beam which probably supported a partition screening a firehood. Re-arrangement of the floorboards also suggests the removal of a hood. A cupboard under the attic stair on the north side is formed from bolection-moulded pine panelling. In the north wall are 2 mullioned windows blocked by the north wing. One is more fully exposed and has a rebate and chamfer of late C17 type. The bedroom of the south wing has raised and fielded panelling of mid-C18 type and a stone fireplace surround of similar date. In the attic the truss over the east end of the main range is visible: it has a collar and a re-used tie-beam-and dates from the late C17 or C18 when the thatched roof was replaced. The truss over the south wing incorporates part of a re-used cruck blade. The truss at the west end of the main range has principals rising from timber corbels, and a high pegged collar.
