SD 91 NW LITTLEBOROUGH CALDERBROOK 1/13 Southern entrance of railway tunnel beneath Todmorden - Road

GV II Tunnel entrance. 1839 on datestone. Engineer G Stephenson. For the Manchester Leeds Railway Co. Rock-faced stone and ashlar. Segmental keystone arch flanked by battered piers which rise above the level of the coped parapet (retaining) wall which in turn sits on a continuous band. A centrally-placed datestone sits above the parapet and is on the only place on the entire line which bears the emblem of the Railway Company.
