TQ 2881 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER WIGMORE STREET W1 56/48 (north side) No 26 (including Nos 86 5.2.70 and 87 Wimpole Street) GV II Shop and flats. Dated 1891 by F L Pearson. Originally of stone and terracotta,now painted, tiled roofs. Asymmetrical corner block in free Jacob ethan style. Basement, 4 main storeys and tiled gabled attic storey. Shop front to ground of No 26 with basket handle arched windows, entablature and splayed corner entrance with pediment. Main feature is large corbelled bowed oriel-tower to corner with 5 mullioned sashed lights to each of its 3 floors, finished off with pierced parapet. Shallow segmental bay window through first and second floors to Wigmore Street, mullioned sashed lights and enriched strings and cornices carved over corner oriel-tower. Quoin pilasters. Four windows on third floor and 3 light casement in finialed gable flanked by obelisks. To Wimpole Street: 2 rectangular 4 storey bays with finialed gables, similar detailings pilastered and mullioned lights; between them the 2 storey canted porch of No 87 with pilastered doorway and crenellated parapet; above on second and third floors are 4 light mullioned windows with pediments. The pierced parapet of corner oriel-tower is carried across this front at eaves level between the gabled bays. Bold arcaded external chimney stack to right of oriel. Some of windows have leaded lights. The entrance to No 86, now blocked, has tapering side pilasters and fanlight divided by short pilasters. Prominent corner site with important group value.
