The Mill House II

Mill and mill house. C18 and C19, possibly some earlier fabric. Rubble, coursed rubble, brickwork in flemish bond, various types of clay roof tile, some slate. A large mill in L-plan, with smaller mill house attached to the east, at a slight angle; also lower outbuilding attached to north gable; mill retains extensive machinery, also unusually large bread oven. Entrance front, to north: two storeys, brick, Bridgewater triple-ridge roof tiles to north slope. To the left a large plain area of walling and a small brick eaves stack; to the right are two 2-light casements at each level, to segmental brick heads with keystone; off-centre left a plank door with studding. Return wing, to right is in coursed squared stone and with pantile roof to coped gable; in 2 storeys, at ground floor a very wide plank door to square head and a 3-light casement to square head and keystone. At first floor, far right, a plank loading door. Beyond the outer gable a lower 2-storey out-building in stone and brick with double roman tile and a stone north gable in small squared coursed stone, and having an arched opening over the mill race. The left return to the main building is canted back after the first bay, in. rubble, and to tile roof with alternating 4 courses plain tile and 14 courses fish-scale tile; left gable, to the south, is coped. In 2 storeys, 3 windows, all 2 or 3-light small-paned casements to stone voussoirs. At left is a lean-to with pantile roof containing the doorway. The south gable built against the earth at ground floor level, with a 2-light small pane casement; gable is coped, and with a cross-saddle stone. Set back from this gable is the back wall of the mill, and a low lean-to fills the internal corner, with slate roof. North gable in main mill with brick stack, large square brick stack to the domestic unit. Interior: the mill block has a series of grain bins at the attic level; at first floor are the two millstones and housings, with turbine machinery on decorative cast iron supports by Gardner of Gloucester at ground floor, and an adjacent space with large tube shaft and deep-set pit probably originally the wheel pit for an overshot wheel. In the short return arm is the entrance to a very large bread oven which is built into the low outbuilding. An interesting group with an unusually complete set of fixed machinery, some units dismantled but apparently in sound condition.
