SWAINSTHORPE IPSWICH ROAD TG 20 SW (west side) 4/96 The Rookery 2/10/51 G.V. II House. Mid C16. Timber framed with brick and wattle and daub infill, plastered and whitewashed. Pantiled roofs. Half H plan with extension to west. 2 storeys with attic storey in west gable extension. South front orientated by 2 large gables, one to east end, the other towards west, both flush with main range. Main range has-large stepped external stack with rebuilt rectangular brick flue. Doorway in east gable. Fenestration of various C18 casements arranged with random logic. Gabled main roof carries a central ridge stack. West gable with a blocked 3-light C16 ovolo moulded mullioned window to ground floor and a louvred ovolo mullioned attic window. Cellar window similar. C18 casement to first floor. Junction of west gable and projecting north-west gable is dominated by a large rectangular stack. Similar fenestration to north side of main range as the south. East gable lit through a 3-light mullioned window and a 3-light C18 casement to first floor. Interior. Lounge has sunk quadrant moulded bridging beams. C20 fireplace. Small framed panelling to ground floor room in east cross wing and a sunk quadrant moulded bridging beam. Rebuilt fireplace but timber overmantel of c.1630 : 3 arched and decorated bays, central pilasters with caryatids and punched frieze. Early C18 corner shell cupboard. 2 staircases : a winder by the stack and west staircase of oak boards. Timber frame with arched braces to corners at first floor. Roof of west wing of tie beams, 2 tiers butt purlins and collars. Roof of main range of ties on arched braces, diminished principals, 2 tiers purlins (Tower tier butted, upper clasped) and cambered collars.
