6/61 Gunton Tower (formerly listed as 4.10.60 Gunton Park Observatory) II*

Observation tower and adjoining ranges. Circa 1830 for Lord Suffield. Gault brick, lead roof. Central archway with concave side wings to north and south fronts. Semicircular brick arch with brick keystone flanked by paired Doric giant pilasters, the lower half of which are rusticated; between each pair of pilasters a square headed window with cross glazing bars, each light tripartite; a band above the windows continues to form the imposts to the arch; above this two oculi with radiating glazing bars; plain cornice; balustraded parapet with ball finials. From this archway rises a 2 stage square tower; to each face of the first stage a pair of semicircular headed sash windows with radiating glazing bars; sill on brackets; plain cornice. Each face of the second stage is glazed with a square headed tripartite sash window the central part having a semicircular glazing bar; flanking engaged Doric columns support a coved cornice; pyramidal roof with flagpole. To each side of the archway are curved single storey wings of 3 bays with semicircular headed windows with T-shaped glazing bars, the lower lights tripartite, the upper with radiating glazing bars; rusticated quoins; plain cornice; flat roof. Restored c1980.
