NY 97 NE BAVINGTON B6342 (South side) 11/4 Bavington Hall

Country house. Late C17. Altered and extended c1720. Roof rebuilt and upper storey altered early C19. Further addition c1930. For the Shafto family. Work of c1720 done for Admiral Delaval. Dressed stone, rough-cast on garden side, with Welsh slate roofs. 3 storeys. Double span with 2-storey L-shaped addition to left. Entrance front: main block of 7 bays, has alternating rusticated quoins and central 6-panelled door in round-arched Gibbs surround. Ground-floor windows have raised surrounds with triple keystones and 18-pane sashes with thick glazing bars. Similar glazing bars in architraves on 1st floor. Architraves to 2nd floor, enlarged in early Cl9 when roof was raised, hold 9-pane sashes with thin glazing bars. Panelled cornice was also added.

2-storey, 4-bay wing to right, probably C17, has 8-pane sashes with thick glazing bars on ground floor and Yorkshire sashes above. Projecting kitchen wing has fine ashlar facade but older masonry to rear. Projecting pedimented centre of one tall storey, 2 bays; and flanking 2-storey single bays. Central tall round- arched windows in architraves. Flanking ground-floor windows are 24-pane sashes with thick glazing bars. Oculus windows on 1st floor.

Garden front, 7 bays, has door with Gibbs surround, large triple keystone and pediment. Sash windows, with intermediate glazing bars removed, in raised surrounds. 2nd-floor windows similar to entrance front. C20, 2-storey, 4-bay addition to right in similar style.

Both spans have shaped gables with kneelers and many octagonal chimneys with concave cornices.

Interior has 2 panelled rooms on ground floor. One has fireplace with terms and scrolled pedimented overmantel. The other has enriched panelling, fireplace within full-height Corinthian pilasters and enriched modillion cornice. An earlier panelled room on first floor has fireplace with pulvinated surround and frieze with plaster heads and angels.

Many other C17, early C18 and early C19 fireplaces. Many 2-panelled doors in front block, 6-panelled doors elsewhere. Late C17 open-well stair with vase balusters and heavily-moulded handrail. One 2-light double-chamfered mullioned window in former external wall.
