Description

GODALMING MINT STREET SU 9643 NE (north side) 12/179 No 22 GV II

House, formerly with framework knitters' workshop. Early C19, and early-mid C19, altered. Painted brick in Flemish bond, plain tile roof. 3 storeys, 1 x 2 bays, the original building a single cell of 2 storeys to which was added a 3- storey cell to rear, and then the front cell was raised to 3 storeys. Central C20 part-glazed door with old 16-pane window with top-hung casement to left, both openings segmental-arched. On 1st floor, mid-C20 window in similarly- arched opening. Wide 2nd-floor window, partly boarded up (on right) and with 3 C20 small-pane lights. Roof hipped with stack on right side. Rear: a wide window to 1st and 2nd floors, the former segmental arched; possibly a similar window to ground floor originally. Late C20 additions not of special interest. Right return: front cell tile-hung. Left return: rear cell has a blocked wide window opening to 2nd floor. Interior: re-used timbers; winder stair; on 2nd floor, rear cell has 1 light remaining of a former wide window in front wall, and also is separately roofed (having square-sectioned rafters with carpenters' marks in sequence) with the front cell roof built up against it, both features indicating that the front cell was heightened after the rear cell had been added. The amount of window space provided in the rear cell indicates its original function as a workshop for framework knitting. This was an important industry in Godalming at that time, and one that required hand-loom weaving which could be done in homes or workshops such as this one which would have held 12-16 looms. Domestic Buildings Research Group, Report Nos 3492 and 3506.
