This is an important and well-known house of distinction but moderate size. It was built in 1699 by a timber-merchant named John Butler but it is constructed in a manner reminiscent of at least 30 years earlier. It is a timber-framed building which was originally and still is faced with red brick and grey headers on the ground floor and tiles above with a bellcast between partly concealing the moulded bressummer above the ground floor. Moulded wooden modillion eaves cornice. Steeply-pitched hipped tiled roof with two tall brick chimneys. Casement windows of 4 square sections with wooden mullions and transoms and small square leaded panes. The centre window bay projects slightly with the bressummer carried up slightly higher and merged in the stepped flat hood of the doorway which is supported on scroll brackets with a curved pediment over containing elaborate plasterwork of two doves, a cherub and flowers. The doorway is flanked by side lights and has a rectangular fanlight and a double door of 4 moulded panes. 2 storeys and attic 5 windows 4 hipped dormers. Contemporary staircase and plaster ceiling inscribed "John Butler built this 1699."
