PARISH OF FINDERN THE GREEN SK 33 SW 1/28 (East Side) 19.1.67 Church of All Saints GV II

Parish church. Rebuilt 1863-4. Sandstone ashlar. Welsh slate roofs with stone coped gables and decorative ridge tiles. West steeple, nave with north aisle and south porch, chancel and north vestry. Chamfered plinth and cornice. West tower of two unequal stages divided by a chamfered stringcourse. Clasping buttresses with one set-off, nook shafts to the upper stage and linked at the top by a corbel table. The west face has a 2-light window with plate tracery. Circular clock face. To the south is a small encircled quatrefoil set high up. To the north a circular clock face. No openings to east. Pyramidal ashlar spire with bead mouldings up the angles. Large 2-light lucarnes as bell-openings, with plate tracery to each face. Weather vane. The south side of the nave has two buttresses each with two set-offs. Steeply gabled south porch, the line of the gable continued as buttresses. Doorway with colonnettes, roll moulded arch. Latticework double doors. To the left a single trefoiled lancet. To the right a 3-light and a 2-light window with plate tracery. The south side of the chancel has a trefoil headed priests doorway with roll moulding and plank door, flanked by 2-light windows with bar tracery. 3-light east window with bar tracery. Lean-to north vestry has a 2-light window of two lancets with a trefoil over. Gabled north aisle has an encircled octofoil east window set high up. To the north are two buttresses with two set-offs, and two 2-light windows with plate tracery. Similar west window. South doorway with continuous roll moulding. Pair of plank doors with decorative iron hinges. Interior: Triple chamfered tower arch, the chamfers with stops. Three bay north aisle aisle with circular piers, circular abaci and double chamfered arches. The chancel arch has an outer chamfered order and roll moulded inner order on semi-circular responds with stiff leaf capitals. Roofs with arched trusses on corbels. Scissor braced roof in the north aisle. Set in the north aisle north wall is a C12 tympanum from the earlier church. Incised with two small figures standing left and right, either side of two rows of saltire crosses, and above, a large cross with chequerboard patterns to left and right. Also in the north aisle is a much weathered incised slab and a small octagonal font dated 1662, with geometrical patterns around the bowl. Richly coloured stained glass of the 1860s and 70s, in the chancel. C20 furnishings.
