7/88 Mill House - GV II House. Mid-C18, with later additions. Red brick; plain tile roof with raised verges; brick central stack. C18 house has a rectangular plan main range aligned north-south facing east and rear wing consisting of 2 parallel ranges aligned east-west, facing west; main range was extended to the south in the early to mid-C19 to form an L-shaped plan; the C19 extension also has a low rear wing extension aligned east-west. 2 storeys with dentilled eaves; 3 bays, late C19 casements within C18 surrounds with segmental heads; 6-panelled door to left with bracketed hood and rectangular overlight containing decorative iron glazing bars. C19 painted brick extension to the left; 2 storeys; 2 bays, casements with segmental heads. West elevation: twin-gabled main house of 2 storeys and 3 windows, glazing bar casements with gauged brick heads and raised keystones. C19 extension to the right with scattered fenestration and single-storey gabled extension wing. Interior: dog-leg staircase with turned balusters, ramped and wreathes hand rail and carved open string; the rear wing contains a single ground-floor room with fireplace flanked by round-headed niches with-raised keys, dentilled cornice with egg and dart moulding over the niches; large wall panelling to north and south walls. Formerly the house of the owner of Elford Mill and at one time inhabited by the late C18 novelist Robert Bage.
