Description

CURDWORTH COLESHILL ROAD SP19SE (North-east side) 4/60 Nos.45-49 (odd) - II House, now divided into 3 dwellings. C15, remodelled internally in the C16 and externally in the C20. Timber-framed and of cruck construction, outer walls partly rebuilt in brick and roughcast; plain tile roof; brick internal lateral stack with lozenge shaped shaft. T-shaped plan: 2-bay hall house with cross-wing at the south-east end and a single-bay extension at the north-west end. One storey and attic. 2:1 window front: C20 glazing bar casements. Cross-wing to the right has a brick band at eaves level and a triangular-headed entrance within a left hand extension. The hall range has a gabled dormer to the right and a gablet over the left hand attic window. Interior: the 2-bay hall range has a central arch-braced cruck truss which supports 2 pairs of trenched purlins with carved wind braces. Traces of a second truss are visible in the south-east wall but it is not certain that this is of cruck construction. There may be another cruck truss in the north-west wall as the wind braces survive here, but this wall is now plastered over. In the C16 a first floor was inserted into the hall. It has a spine beam with wide chamfers and chamfered and stopped joists. At the same time a chimney stack was built in the north-west corner of the hall. The overmantle of the fireplace is decorated with a plaster oak tree motif, probably C17. Also visible at ground level is the foot of one of the cruck blades. The foot of the corresponding cruck has been boxed in.
