Farmhouse, formerly farmhouse and cottage or brewhouse. Right-hand part late C16 or early C17 altered in the early C18 and restored 1985. Former cottage late C17 linked by wooden 1 storey extension. Right-hand part built of stone rubble with some brick dressings. Tiled roof with right-hand end square brick chimneystack and off-central clustered chimneystack. 2 storeys and attics; 3:5 windows. Gable end has stone coping with kneelers. 3 modern hipped dormers with casements to attic. Triple casements to 1st floor in original window surrounds, 2 stone, one brick. Further blocked original window surround on 1st floor. Ground floor has one 3-light mullion to left with keystone, a similar modern window in blocked-in doorcase, a 16-pane early to mid C19 sash with cambered brick head and to the right, 2 mid C19 sashes with verticals only replacing a stone early C18 window surround with obtusely pointed arch behind. Modern stone gabled porch. Deep plinth to right-hand side. Dripmoulding linking 2 ground floor right windows. Rear elevation has 1st floor triple mullioned window and blocked double mullion on the ground floor. Other windows are casements, some with brick dressings. Deep plinth. Interior has late C16 or early C17 stone 4-centred arched fireplace in parlour with flower on one spandrel and heart on the other and early C18 fielded panelling with furniture rail. Early C18 staircase. Roof has principal rafters and staggered purlins. Chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops. Rush light mark. Attached by a stone single storeyed link block is a former separate dwelling or brewhouse. Late C17 altered late C20. Isle of Wight stone rubble with renewed tiled roof. 1 storey and attics 3 windows. 2 modern hipped dormers. Ground floor has 2 modern casement windows with older brick surrounds. Modern porch. Interior has open fireplace with wooden bressumer and bread oven. Ceiling beams have lamb's tongue stops. Partition walls have some herringbone brick infill. Early C18 door. Manor held by the King in 1086 and previously held by King Harold at the time of the Norman invasion. Kern's proximity to the demolished mansion of Knighton Gorges in Newchurch parish and fine quality early C18 panelling suggest that it may have had a higher status than a farmhouse; perhaps as a Dower House to Knighton Gorges.
