SHANKLIN SZ5880 CHURCH ROAD 1352-0/9/197 The Grange GV II

House, former rectory. C17 or C18 in origin and shown on Ordnance Survey map of 1792 but altered and extended in mid C19 and C20. Stone rubble with thatched roof. Irregular form but roughly L-shaped. 2 storeys. South-east elevation has 4 windows. Left side has a projecting gable with plain bargeboards and a triple casement window. Central part of 2 bays has 1 tall 4-light casement and one 2-light casement. Two centred arched doorcase with 6-panelled door and carved sapndrels. To right is slightly recessed gable with plain bargeboards. Stone mullioned attic window, and 3-light casement below. Brick chimneystacks. South-west elevation has 3 casement windows and 1 eyebrow dormer. French windows and later stone and glazed porch. To left mid C19 addition of one bay, stone with tiled roof and one triple mullioned window and one 5-light canted bay. To north-west are attached C19 outbuildings. Interior retains some chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops and 2-panelled door with L hinges.
