Description

BURGH GRUNDISBURGH ROAD TM 25 SW (East Side) 2/60 The Old Rectory 16/3/66 (formerly listed under Drab's Lane) II House, formerly rectory. Late C18 with early and late-C19 and early-C20 additions and alterations. Red Flemish bond brick with a plain tile roof. Two storeys with attic. Entrance front: five bays, near-symmetrically disposed and originally symmetrical. Slightly projecting plinth and band of 3 bricks depth between the floors. To the centre is a projecting single-storey porch of rectangular plan and late C19/early C20 date which has a central 6-panel door and flat roof. This extends to partially obscure the bays at either side of centre which are blocked. The two outer bays at left and right retain their tall sash windows of 3x4 panes with flat-arched heads. To the first floor are four windows of 3x4 sash panes of lesser height than those at ground floor level and to the centre is a round-arched window with interlacing, cusped glazing bars. Hipped roof with valley to the centre. Square chimney stacks of 4 flues at either side. Flat roofed C20 dormer at right of 3x2 panes. At the time of resurvey (1987) the roof tiles were being relayed and the left hand dormer, which was similar to that at right, was being rebuilt. To left of the facade is a semi-circular bow window of early C19 date, attached to the left hand flank. A further, rectangular addition to the right hand side extends from this side and has blank walling with a band of 3 bricks depth below the brick parapet which has an ashlar coping. The left hand flank has the projecting bow window at right with French windows at the centre with a flat-arched head at either side of which are windows of 3x4 sash panes. To the first floor at centre is a window of 3x4 sash panes before which is a balcony with wrought iron railing of early C20 date supported on slender iron columns. The windows to either side of this are blocked. Brick parapet above with a stone coping. To left of this is a projecting rectangular bay of late-C19 date which is stuccoed and has chamfered quoins at the corners. To the centre at ground floor level is a 1/2-glazed door with overlight and to the first floor is a tripartite window, the central light being of 3x4 panes with lateral lights of lx4 panes. The right hand flank has a projecting rectangular bay at left which has a sash window of 3x4 panes with a cambered head at ground floor level and a similar window with flat head to the first floor. Band of 3 bricks depth below the shallow parapet. To the right hand flank of this projecting bay is a pump with a wooden painted casing bearing a metal plaque decorated with affronted profile heads and foliage. To right of this bay and recessed is walling with patterning of fired headers and a door at centre with classical surround, having pilasters at either side with moulded caps and lattice pattern and quatrefoils to the frieze. Panelled reveals and a door of 6 raised and fielded panels. Rear: projecting wing at left of centre with round-arched window to ground floor right which was originally a doorway, now half blocked and to left of this is a projecting single-storey gabled projection. To the first floor is a tripartite window slightly to right of centre, with a central sash of 3x4 panes. To left of this is a 2- light casement window, originally narrower and having a cambered head. To right is a 2-light window with a cambered head. At far right is the flank of the stuccoed C19 bay with chamfered quoins. To the attic are two flat- headed dormer windows of 3x2 panes.
