TQ 04 NW SHALFORD CP THE STREET (East side) 4/167 The Mill House 19.2.57 (formerly listed as The Old Malt house) II

House. C16 core, possibly older, reclad and extended in mid C17 in "Artisan- Mannerist" style, C19 extensions and C20 restoration and additions to ends. Timber framed core clad in sandtone rubble with brick quoins and dressings to rear, rendered on ground floor and tile hung above - some in fishscale pattern - on street front with brick extensions. Plain tiled roofs of varying heights. Two storeys with attics in gables.

Old entrance front (to rear): three gabled ranges with inner gable shaped and lower, outer Dutch gables with brick dentilled pediments. End stack to right and further stack to rear. Brick plinth and brick plat bands over ground and first floors of left hand gable, brick string course coping above. Corbelled string course over ground floor right and Ionic plasters of rubbed bricks with capitals canted on the angle supporting full entablature extending across the first floor; brick keystone to centre. One attic leaded casement window in each gable and two cambered head, first floor windows to left. One 4-light "cross" window to centre and right. Two ground floor windows to left and one to right. Glazed door to right of centre and to left between brick piers with stepped tops and flat stone porch hood. Single storey hipped roof brick extension to right end, slate roofed extension projecting to front left with sash windows and pump attached to wall.

Entrance front (facing street): projecting gabled cross wing to right with cusped and pierced bargeboards under spiked finial. Large ridge stack to left further stack to left end. Plat band over ground floor left and moulded eaves board above. Diamond-pane, leaded glazing. Glazed doors. C20 extension.

Interior: some framing with rendered infill survives, some panelling remains. Fine early C17 staircase with rusticated newel posts and pierced splat balisters - similar to that surviving in Slyfield Manor.
