3/190 Tyrone Cottage and Beech Cottage

House, now 2 houses. Probably C17, altered and added to C18, C19 and C20. Timber frame, rubblestone and brick. Plain tile roofs. 3-bay timber-framed house much restored, and added to at left end, in C18 in partly-galleted brick and rubblestone, with central rear addition mid-late C20. 2 storeys, stepping up to right (Beech Cottage); elevation now of two 2-bay cottages, Beech Cottage stepped forward. Beech Cottage has front wall and 1st floor of right return of red brick in Flemish bond with some grey headers; rear and ground floor of right return are of galleted rubblestone; gable of left return is tile-hung; timber wall plate to front and rear walls, wall post in recessed rear-right corner, and mid-rail tie-beam, collar and studs to right return. Tyrone cottage is of galleted rubblestone, but with brick in irregular bond to 1st floor of right-hand bay, and tile-hung gable to rear right projection. C20 addition is of brick and tile-hung. Ground-floor openings have segmental header-brick arches, 1st floor openings square-headed, windows have brick jambs and leaded casements, 2 old casements with saddle bars surviving to Beech Cottage. Front elevation: Tyrone Cottage has central 4-panel door (top panels glazed) in added, gabled, log porch (not of special interest) flanked by 3-light windows on each floor and with a small window to far right on ground floor in position of a fire-window; tabled end stacks. Beech Cottage is narrower, but formerly was similar without the fire-window; however, the central doorway was blocked and a doorway inserted to left having board door and porch as before (not of special interest); tabled stack to right end. Rear: Tyrone Cottage has gabled projecting bay on right with 3-light window to each floor. Beech Cottage has on left a blocked door with 3-light window to its right on each floor. Across the centre the C20 2-storey extension has gable on left matching that above right-hand bay. Right return (Beech Cottage) has bread-oven projection; ground- floor masked by lean-to which is not of special interest. Interior: timber-framed cross-walls, defining the original 3 cells have rubble plinths, large rectangular panels and wattle and daub infill; they are situated between door and right-hand window of Tyrone Cottage at junction between the 2 houses and between door and blocked opening of Beech Cottage. The partitions are full- height and (in Beech Cottage at least) formerly continued right up to the roof. Both houses have C18 style metal-strapping at jointing of timber members, old board doors with ironwork, and large-scantling cross-beams with lamb's tongue stops. Some old, wide, floorboards to Beech Cottage (lst floor) and some early, square-section joists to Tyrone Cottage (right-hand room). Beech Cottage has fine chamfered 4- centred arched, brick fireplace with bread-oven and to its left a cupboard and a doorway to winder stair; similarly arched, smaller fireplace above with C19 grate. Tyrone Cottage has original fireplace in right-hand room, with timber bressumer, and in left-hand (probably added) room a large inglenook with triangular cut soffit to bressumer and old mantle ledge. Roof of Beech Cottage has 3 collared trusses clasping plank-like through purlins, square-section rafters pegged at apex, and one pair of flat wind braces.
