Large house with attached squash court and stabling. Largely 1900-3, for Earl De La Warr in Jacobean style. Built of coursed sandstone rubble with tiled roofs and sandstone chimneys, U-shaped plan with principal rooms to south west, service wing to south east, squash court to east and stabling to west. Principal or north east front is of 2 storeys and attics with 2 triangular gables and 2 storey projecting porch with carved finial and kneelers, 4 light oriel,with crenellated cornice and 4-centred arched doorcase 6 windows, mainly mullioned or mullioned and transomed windows. Ground floor has large 3 light canted bay. To left the service wing has 4 double gables, 1 external chimneystack and a 2-storey projection to ground floor. Attached to the east is a squash court with coal cellar below. This is of 2 storeys sandstone with tile hung attic storey and hipped tiled roof, 2 gabled dormers to attic and 4 cambered diamond leaded casements. External stone chimneystack. Gable end has external staircase and hipped tiled weatherporch with wooden columns. To west is a coachhouse with attached cottages. Built of coursed sandstone rubble with tiled roof. 4 gables with diamond leaded lights. 6 double doors. To left is cambered doorcase and 1 mullioned window to tack room. Rear has 3 gabled and 1 hipped dormer and brick lean-to. A walled courtyard connects with a further cottage, the ground floor of brown brick in stretcher bond with tile hung 1st floor with 2 gables with diamond paned casements. The side elevation is of sandstone and the rear elevation of brown brick with half-hipped barn attached with hipped lean-to with continuous windows. The south west or garden front is of 2 storeys and attics with 7:8:7 windows. 4 hipped dormers and 3 gables rising full height with attic windows and 2 of them having 2 storey canted bays with 9 lights. 2 storey square porch with balustrading above. Mullioned and transomed windows. Band above 1st floor with lead rainwater heads. Right side_elevation has external chimneystack with curved arch on brackets below giving access to a ground floor window. Attached to the left is the one-storey Library with 7-light crenelleted bay and hipped tiled roof, further to the left the Billiard Room with similar 9-light bay and a loggia with 4-centred arches. Service wing to the right of the garden front has 6 gabled dormers, 4 of which are joined together, and 6 mullioned windows. 1 storey sandstone offices are attached to the east including game larder and dairy and also attached to the east is a sandstone garden wall incorporating a 4-centred arched pedestrian gate. Front hall has a stone fireplace with 4 centred arch and overmantel with 2 tiers of angels (4 in all) set in round headed arches. (Early C17 style plank and murtin panelling and 2 linenfold panelled doors with strapwork decoration and pilasters with lions head masks and cherubs. Main staircase in Jacobean style with pierced splat balusters and square newel posts with heraldic beasts. Plastered ceiling with strapwork motifs. Morning Room has Queen Anne style panelling and fireplace has wooden surround with central panel with floral swag and marble fireplace. Library has stone fireplace with oak overmantel incorporating terms, built in bookshelves and a plastered ceiling. Billiard Room has Queen Anne fireplace with bolection moulded surround with panels above surmounted by broken pediments and pilasters. Dining Room has Queen Anne panelling with dado rail, pilasters and marble fireplaces. 1st floor landing has elaborate window seat with fretted front concealing original central heating pipes. Bedroom above Dining Room has Queen Anne style panelling and marble fire surround. There are several similar bedrooms, 1 with basket grate to the marble fireplace. Bathrooms have original fittings and there is a housemaid's pantry with double sink. One second floor bedroom has a fireplace with stone 4 centred arch with 2 round-arched oak panels divided by a term and male mask. Servants staircase has turned balusters. Kitchen retains built in wooden cupboards. Squash court roof has tie beam, collar beam, through purlins and boarded rafters and has a plain balustrated gallery.
